ABOUT ME
Long before I began designing for dolls, I worked in fashion, film and theatre costume design. In many ways, creating doll fashions was a natural progression—all the storytelling, imagination and craftsmanship of costume design, simply brought to life on a much smaller scale.
Working professionally under the name Judith Dorsman, I designed costumes for many Australian films, television productions and stage shows. My work was recognised with a BAFTA nomination for Picnic at Hanging Rock, the inaugural Australian Film Institute Award for Costume Design for The Picture Show Man, and a Sammy Award for Caddie.
When I discovered the world of dolls, I realised it offered a wonderful new stage for everything I loved about design.
I rarely think of my dolls as simply models for clothes. Each one has her own personality, character and story. I enjoy creating outfits around themes, adaptations and imagined storylines, combining fashion with a touch of theatre and fantasy.
Much of my inspiration comes from the shelves and drawers filled with vintage silks, delicate laces, buttons, beads and trims that I collected during my years designing for period films and stage productions. A tiny piece of fabric that was once considered an offcut can now become an entire gown—which also gives me the perfect excuse to keep every beautiful little remnant!
One of the most memorable chapters in my doll-design journey was being selected as one of twelve international designers to compete in Project Dollway, a worldwide search for a leading doll fashion designer. After months of challenges, I was delighted to finish as runner-up and to win the overall internet popular vote. The competition stretched my imagination, tested my skills and inspired me to create in ways I had never thought possible.

Over the years, I have also been fortunate to receive many awards for my doll fashions, with several creations later auctioned to raise money for charity.
